SAN FRANCISCO, Sept. 19 (Xinhua) -- A troupe of overseas Chinese artists in the U.S. city of Seattle on Thursday put on a performance of traditional Chinese opera to mark the 70th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China (PRC).

The show was performed by artists with the Seattle Chinese Opera Arts Association USA (SCOAA USA) and representatives from the Seattle Chongqing Folk Association (SCFA).

Wu Xiaomei, SCOAA USA president who is also a famous artist of the jinghu, a Chinese bowed string instrument commonly used in Peking Opera performances, said, "Amid the current China-U.S. trade tensions that impact the overall China-U.S. ties, we want to contribute our share to bolstering friendship between the two countries and cultural exchanges."

"Art is beyond borders and transcends language barriers," she said, adding that the SCOAA USA wants to give overseas Chinese a feeling of home at a time when people are celebrating the traditional Chinese Mid-Autumn Festival and the 70th anniversary of the PRC's founding.

Both associations agreed to pool their respective resources to support the development of traditional Chinese opera in the United States, said SCFA president Wu Xia, who is a famous artist of Shaoxing opera, a form of Chinese opera popular in China's southeastern coastal regions.

The SCOAA USA was established in Seattle in March this year to make the traditional Chinese opera accessible to more Americans.
