PHNOM PENH, May 31 (Xinhua) -- The ruling Cambodian People's Party (CPP) of Prime Minister Samdech Techo Hun Sen won a landslide victory in local council elections on May 26, Hang Puthea, a spokesman for the National Election Committee (NEC), said on Friday, citing temporary results.

Seven political parties had contested in the third mandate elections for municipal, provincial, town and district councilors.

Puthea said the CPP received 11,123, or 96.1 percent, out of a total of 11,565 votes cast by sitting commune chiefs and councilors across the kingdom.

The royalist Funcinpec Party of Prince Norodom Ranariddh came second with 226 votes, and the Khmer National United Party was third with 176, he added.

The spokesman said the Cambodian Nationality's Party garnered 14 votes, the Cambodian Youth Party gained eight, and the Khmer Will Party got two, while the Khmer Republican Party did not earn even a single vote.

"The number of seats a party gets is not yet available," he told Xinhua, adding the official results will be announced on June 8.

The non-universal elections were voted by the sitting commune chiefs and councilors, typically along with party lines, for 559 municipal and provincial councilors and 3,555 town and district seats across the country.
