NEW YORK, Feb. 12 (Xinhua) -- A report released Monday by a New York-based market research company predicted that more young users would stop using Facebook in 2018.

"Facebook will lose 2 million users ages 24 and younger this year," the eMarketer company said in the report.

"This year, for the first time, less than half of the U.S. internet users aged 12 to 17 will use Facebook via any device at least once per month,"

The report listed declining rates of Facebook users in the U.S. at different age stages. The number of users at 11 or younger would drop by 9.3 percent, 12 to 18 by 5.6 percent and 18 to 24 at 5.8 percent.

People at older ages would mainly contribute to the increasing total amount of Facebook U.S. users, which according to eMarketer would reach 169.5 million this year.

The younger audience would be siphoned to other social media platforms like Instagram and Snapchat.

The eMarketer forecasted an increase of 1.6 million Instagram users aging 24 or younger and a 1.9 million increase of such users at Snapchat.

The report also said that young users tend to choose brand-new social media tools if more older people would be attracted by platforms like Facebook.

Such a trend is likely to accelerate as social media companies keep redesigning the software to be much easier to use, according to eMarketer quoting its principal analyst Debra Aho Williamson.

Moreover, Facebook's original design of sharing every life moments with friends and family publicly seems outdated, as more young people prefer functions like Instagram's disappearing photo or video.

The decline of Facebook and increase of Instagram would somehow strike a balance for Facebook Inc., as the social networking company owns both.
