RIYADH, Jan. 11 (Xinhua) -- China beat Australia 1-0 on Sunday in its second Group D match at the 2026 AFC U23 Asian Cup in Riyadh.

China broke the deadlock in the 43rd minute after winning a set piece on the left. In a goalmouth scramble, Peng Xiao scored from inside the penalty area to give China a 1-0 lead.

Australia failed to register a shot on target in the first half and created few clear chances against China's defense.

After the break, Australia increased the pressure. In the 62nd minute, it created several chances, but China goalkeeper Li Hao made two saves in quick succession. In second-half stoppage time, Li's save rebounded and went into the net off Australian player Giuseppe Bovalina's hand, but the goal was disallowed after a VAR review.

China held on to seal the win.

Speaking at the post-match press conference, Peng said his goal was the result of teamwork.

"It was a very tough match. Our team fought like warriors on the pitch, and this goal is the result of everyone's collective efforts. The goal belongs to the whole team, not to me alone."

China head coach Antonio Puche Vicente praised the team's performance.

"This is unbelievable. It is historic for China's football. They played fantastically," he said.

China, which drew 0-0 with Iraq in its opener, will face Thailand in its final group match on Wednesday. ■
