SEOUL, Dec. 15 (Xinhua) -- The Seoul Central District Court on Monday sentenced Roh Sang-won, South Korea's former intelligence commander, to two years in jail and a fine of 24.9 million won (about 16,930 U.S. dollars) in the first trial over his alleged illegal acquisition of personnel information.

Roh was indicted in June on charges of taking over military information, including personal information of intelligence agents, to form an unofficial investigation team tasked with a probe into the alleged election rigging.

He was also charged with receiving cash and department store gift certificates from others under the pretext of lobbying for their promotions.

Roh was suspected of getting deeply involved in the plotting process of the emergency martial law declaration that was issued by former impeached President Yoon Suk-yeol on the night of Dec. 3 last year, but was revoked by the National Assembly hours later. ■
