UNITED NATIONS, Aug. 28 (Xinhua) -- A UN special envoy for Syria has invited a number of countries for joint consultations at the UN office in Geneva on Sept. 14, a spokesman said Tuesday.

The Special Envoy for Syria, Staffan de Mistura, has invited Egypt, France, Germany, Jordan, Saudi Arabia, Britain and the United States for the coming talks, said Stephane Dujarric, spokesman for UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres at the daily news briefing.

The special envoy would like to take this opportunity to discuss with senior representatives of these countries the way ahead on the political process pursuant to Security Council resolution 2254 (2015), including the UN effort to facilitate the establishment of a constitutional committee, and the broader dimensions of the effort, said Dujarric.

The Geneva talks would come two days after a scheduled meeting between de Mistura and representatives from Russia, Turkey and Iran on Sept. 11-12.

De Mistura is tasked with picking members of Syria's Constitutional Committee after receiving nominations from the Syrian government and the opposition.
