SUVA, July 21 (Xinhua) -- Fiji launched on Saturday a free Wifi hot spot at the iconic Ratu Sukuna Park in the capital Suva, as part of the government's efforts to make more ordinary Fijians access free internet service.

Launching the free Wifi hot spot at the park in downtown Suva, Fiji's Acting Prime Minister Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum said that this is an effort made by the Fijian government to further empower ordinary Fijians.

He said that young Fijians will now be able to chat with each other, download and upload materials through the use of free WiFi connection and use this information to benefit their schools, towns, cities and the country.

"The idea is to ensure that our young people as well as every Fijian citizen is able to access this technology. This will create a more knowledge based society," he said, adding that "this is the first of many Wifi hot spots that will be set up throughout the country."

Sayed-Khaiyum said that the free Wifi is adopted to benefit the 70 percent of the population that are below the age of 40.

People can receive free high speed Wifi for 60 minutes everyday on a daily basis in certain areas around the country, which has a population of more than 880,000.

Sayed-Khaiyum said that this program will shortly be made available in other main parks in the country.

Some 40 million Fijian dollars (about 18.9 million U.S. dollars) has been allocated to the ICT sector for increased speed in public Wifi hot spots in the island nation.?
