DAMASCUS, Feb. 5 (Xinhua) -- As many as 500 people have been killed and wounded during the two-week-long Turkish military campaign against the Kurdish-held Afrin region in northern Syria, state news agency SANA reported on Monday.

The casualties have been taken to the Afrin hospital, said SANA, adding that 142 civilians were killed and 345 others wounded by the Turkish military offensive on Afrin in the northern countryside of Aleppo near the Turkish border.

On Monday, the Turkish shelling targeted a center of the Red Crescent in Afrin, leaving big damages in the facility, according to SANA.

The Turkish military campaign started on Jan. 20, targeting historic sites, mosques, residential areas and the infrastructure in the Afrin enclave, SANA added.

Meanwhile, the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) stressed in a recent statement that it will keep confronting the Turkish forces and their allies of the Syrian rebels in Afrin.

The Kurdish forces have lost 15 towns on the outskirts of Afrin to the Turkish forces and allied Syrian rebels.

The Turkish side has stressed that the war will continue in Afrin and will start another offensive on the Kurdish-held Manbij town in northern Aleppo countryside until eliminating the Kurdish forces in the region near Turkey.
